TY - JOUR T1 - Wer war Julius von Stubendorff? PY - 2016 N2 - The governors representing the Tsar in eighteenth-century Siberia had a key role in opening up the Russian East to commerce and troops, but very much also to science. One of the experts called in to explore both the geographic and ethnic nature of the vast empire was Julius von Stubendorff (1811–1878). In the process, von Stubendorff took detailed notes of the languages and customs he encountered. This article introduces four letters which shed light on the complexities of the era.
