While Grube accrued fame as an author and translator (History of Chinese Literature (1902), monograph on Chinese folklore (1901), collection of Chinese shadow-plays, Fengshen yanyi) and Gabelentz is known as an outstanding grammarian and linguist, both scholars were also Altaicists of note. Both pursued Manchu topics for their doctoral studies, Grube also during his professorial research. Grube taught Manchu at the University of Berlin and gained recognition for his groundbreaking analysis of the Jurchen language as well as for extracting glossaries out of Nanai and Gilyak texts, which would subsequently form the basis of the first Western dictionaries of these languages. The letter file also documents the friendly personal relationship between disciple and professor, a rather uncommon feature for the nineteenth century. The introductory part of the paper is dedicated to Grube's doctorate at Leipzig University and offers his professors' evaluation of his thesis as well as of the viva voce examination.}, url = {https://doi.org/10.13173/centasiaj.56.2013.0219} doi = {10.13173/centasiaj.56.2013.0219} }
