tüg(ü)zl(ü)g (a)t(ı)γ - eine neue Lesart zu tög(ü)nl(ü)g (a)t(ı)γ in den Tuñuquq-Inschriften (II, Ostseite 4 [= Kolumne 54]) research-article

Central Asiatic Journal, Jahrgang 64 (2021), Ausgabe 1-2, Seite 49 - 55

The Tuñuquq inscription consists of two separate stones. The first stone is preserved in better condition than the other stone. The inscriptions were erected by Tuñuquq, advisor and statesman of the Türk Khanate. This article focuses on the phrase <tẅgnlgTG> in line 54 of the inscriptions. This contribution proposes a new reading and interpretation of the phrase based on historical evidence. Unlike previous interpretations, I arrive at the conclusion that the phrase <tẅgzlgTG> can be read as tüg(ü)zl(ü)g (a)t(ı)γ and that the phrase here means ‘horse with blaze (on the forehead)‘.

The Tuńuquq inscription consists of two separate steles. The first stele is preserved in better condition than the other stele. The inscription was made by Tuńuquq, advisor and statesman of the Göktürk Khanate. This article focuses on the sentence …] süŋ(ü)g(ü)n ačdımız in line 28 of the inscription. This contribution proposed a new filling of the lacuna at the beginning of the line and other meaning of the verb – based on historical evidence. On the basis of previous interpretations, I arrive at the conclusion that the lacuna can be filled with [qıl(ı)č(ı)]n and that the verb – here means ‘to conquer’ in elliptical use.
