The passage of time, and the predictability of our future, have always
preoccupied the individual and our societies, and calendars which indicate
auspicious and unlucky days play an important role in this quest. This article
traces the development of calendars from the earliest surviving manuscripts
located in Dunhuang, Turfan and Khara-khoto to influences from early China,
India and western Asia, and latemediaeval China. In particular the tenth-century
calendars excavated at Dunhuang, with its twenty-eight lodges in seven
sexagenary cycles (one for each day of the month) show signs of significant
complexity. Arrault concludes that these combine the twenty-eight lodges with
the twelve houses of the Western zodiac.
